As many of you know, I have been tracking my progress of my new craft room (or should I call it my studio? Sounds a bit …). Well, it will probably be called many things – I’m hoping Mum’s hideaway among others! I did toy with idea of a key pad door for a few seconds but that’s a bit extreme!
Well here we are…
A totally blank and very white canvas. Technically it’s not finished yet as have had a slight hitch with tilers & tiles so one corner of the room is as yet untiled. Also, there is still no door, skirting boards or architraves but I am so very impatient to get started I decided (much to the annoyance of Mr Fit) to make a start.
I have looked for inspiration and craft room ideas on Pinterest and YouTube for many months now so I knew the basics were going to be lots of Ikea units. The first thing I needed was a sturdy desk unit to hold my computer and sewing/embroidery machines. I kept my old kitchen counter top so I needed something to put it on. I settled upon 2 Alex units from Ikea. Yes, unfortunately Ikea Alex is a drawer unit and not a hunky handyman. Mmmm… sorry momentarily distracted.
So here are my photos of constructing my desk unit.
Yes the flat pack box

And the counting of all the bits and pieces!

Coco was keen to be involved – perhaps quality control?

The first bit was easy and soon I had a u-shape with prep for the top underway

Again Coco felt it was her job to inspect the progress as I prepped the bottom panel

And that was the shell done – now for the drawers

Again this was pretty straightforward and the screws weren’t in at this point because I had ‘mislaid’ my hammer.

After a few taps with the hammer, the drawers were ready. It’s best to pull out the drawer rails for getting the drawers in their places. 2 smaller drawers at the top and 3 larger on the bottom. Then pull the rail out to the end of the drawer and the final screw will keep it in place. It goes in from the inside of the drawer so as not to upset the sliding mechanism.

And there you have it one completed Ikea Alex drawer unit. I think that this was my first ever Ikea make (although Mr Fit has done a few before). It was much easier than I expected and from opening the box to completion took me 75mins. So not too time consuming either.

The second one took even less time as I had a little help.
And here it is the final product – my desk. A leftover countertop plus 2 Ikea Alex units equals my new desk!
Success!
