He’s alive o he’s alive! I still can’t really believe this amazing new part of my story!
But I’m getting ahead of myself…
So I told you, we were walking home to Emmaus. We hadn’t gone far when a fellow traveller joined us and struck up a conversation. He didn’t seem to have heard what had been going on the last week in Jerusalem so Cleopas started filling him in. I walked behind them, it’s not really proper for me to show too much interest in talking with him, a stranger.
But of course I was listening. Soon enough I was listening intently as first he seemed called us foolish and unbelieving (really!).But then his voice softened and he began to teach from the Torah and the prophets. This man took familiar truths that we knew and explained their meaning. He showed us clearly that the Messiah would have to suffer before he entered His glory. We had expected a the Son of God to be like a lion but the Son of Man had come like a lamb – a sacrificial lamb. Just like Isaiah had said
But he was pierced for our rebellion,
crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole.
He was whipped so we could be healed.
We were home by then and so we offered hospitality to this man. It was simple fare, just bread and water. But something about the way he lifted the bread to break it open, SUDDENLY WE KNEW – it was JESUS. And then he disappeared!
Hardly any time passed until we were back on the road again, our hearts bursting with the news. He”s alive! He had died but now he’s alive. He is risen from the grace. We had seen the risen Lord Jesus with our own eyes. He had even taught us about his life and death. We needed to tell Peter, John, Mary and the others. We had dawdled on the way home, lacking purpose until He had met us. But this time, on our return journey, we walked with purpose. We went over all He had taught us so that we would not forget a precious word! We could hardly wait so to tell His other followers these new truths.
But why is? Of course we had followed Him, but still why us? As a woman my testimony isn’t even considered that reliable.
But He had trusted Cleopas & I with important truths and teachings. i had never felt so seen, so loved, so trusted with truths most precious
