Rummikub

What’s your favorite game (card, board, video, etc.)? Why?

Our family favourite is definitely Rummikub

Rummikub is played with tiles (not cards) and can be played with 2 or more players. There are only 4 trays to hold the tiles but we often squeeze in another player with no problem! It’s a mix of the games rummy and mahjong. Our first game was given to my parents by an American student they hosted for a few weekends while they were studying in NI. I think they were studying in John Brown University in Arkansas but I don’t know how they came to be in Northern Ireland!

Rummikub can prompt ‘lively family discussions’

The game is a fun one for children but also offers enough strategy and luck to still be challenging for us adults

My parents learned not to play Rummikub with my kids on the glass topped table in their conservatory. A certain, enterprising young gentleman dropped a tile, crept under the table to pick it up and searched for the tile he wanted among the facedown tiles on the glass above his head!

Even the family pets have been known to offer their advice on Rummikub strategies.

The family have also been known to dabble in other board games but the one most likely to be hard fought is …. Monopoly. Playing Monopoly with family is usually fought to the humiliating end if bankruptcy for all but the winner!

It requires both nerves of steel & strong negotiating skills – as well as an ability to shake off the inevitable family banter 😱
